Here is the Aialik glacier in the Kenai Fjords National Park
Just look at all those spires, cracks and incredible ice caves
Notice the dark line in the center of the glacier
Sometimes this dark stripe can be seen running down the middle of a
glacier. That is pulverized rock that was pushed up between two merging
glaciers. Keep an eye on this line, by the end of the session, much of
the line is covered with crashing ice and snow!
Also, look really close at the base, that dark brown line to the mid
right is our sea lion and there is a bird flying above the ice cave at the
water line just to give you a perspective as to size!
The sounds of the glacier were incredible. The tour guide shut off the boat
and made everyone sit in total silence for 15 minutes to just listen and
enjoy the sounds it made as it groaned and protested profusely! Sometimes,
it was as loud as a gunshot! We took digital videos, so you can see and hear
the glacier, but those are very large files and are only available on the
CD!
Our
bird either daring nature, or trying to get into the ice cave? This bird
would not quit!
Here is our bird again, notice the snow building up at the base of the
glacier
Just awesome! Look how high the splashes go
You can see some of the chunks of ice and snow falling midair as the camera
captures what is too quick for our eyes to really see as well
Here is some of the fallen snow and ice building up at the base- look
closely at the base to the mid left? What is that object? It appears to be
an animal? possibly a caribou or deer?
Again, see the pile ups of fallen ice and show after our incredible show!
Here is the left side of the glacier
again check out the rock, relatively clean at the start
Look at the swirls in the ice and all the incredible patterns that it makes
in the glacier
Here is the beginning of some ice and snow crashing
More
Wow. . . . . . . . . . . Look in the front on the surface of the water at
all the new ice that is floating
our rock is almost covered
Look at the deep lines
Our sea lions resting and playing near our rock and ice cropping at the
right side of the glacier. This is where the extremely large calving
occurred during our session. It was incredible and brought tears to our
eyes.
Look at that big shelf of ice that is ready to fall off over the rock. You
can see the large cracks and the lighter color in the ice
Two birds daring fate!
Here is our bird again, checking out all the damage. Remember the beginning
of the session, this rock was not covered with all with snow and ice. The
large section of ice crashed !This is on the right side of the glacier
Look at how large the ice overhangs on the base of the mountain
ok, look, a large portion of our line is missing and covered with snow and
ice!
Receding glaciers are melting faster than they are advancing.
Is that Nature's plan or are we speeding up the process?
